Markbass Super Pro DI uses?

Can I use this as a go-between between a smaller amp with XLR out and an external cab? In other words, as a substitute for a speaker out when there isn't one but there does exist an XLR out?

No, the XLR out on an amp is the preamp signal only, it is not out of the power amp section. So it will not drive a speaker at all.

No. A DI is essentially a converter box that changes your high-impedance, unbalanced, instrument-level signal from your bass to a low-impedance, balanced, mic (or line sometimes) level signal that can be sent to the mixing board. There is no way that it will power a speaker.

Also, it's worth noting that the XLR output on your amp IS a DI, and DIs convert 1/4" cables to XLR, but not vice-versa.
