Never tried that one, but I have the trem and phaser from the same line, they sound fantastic with bass.

It has a deep boost switch, that may get you where you want to be.

Back in the late 80's and early 90's, during the whole "grunge"/Seattle sound days, there was an amazing band called TAD. The bass player, Kurt Danielson, used the original Guv'nor. His tone is nothing short of monstrous.

A few examples...

ENORMOUS SOUND! "Infrared Riding Hood" is a killer album.

LONG LIVE TAD.

I tried one a few months back and did not like it. IMHO the overdrive had no warmth to it. YMMV.

I haven't, but from what I hear, the original is the one to get. According to Ebay's completed listings, it's the sought after of the two. Your experience could have different results, however.

Marshall guvnor is good overdrive for bass. Two are excellent to, one stacked into the other. Used them before I switched to multi effects many yrs ago.

I got a Guvnor2 a few weeks ago. Fits a hole between my sansamp prog bddi, mastotron and little big muff. Rather dark-ish distortion, quite 'barky'. In the studio I often use a send on a bass to a Marshall amp sim (Softube vintage amp room) for bite and this pedal gives me that sound.

Deep and bass are full out to not lose low end pressure on stage. I use it in series, not in parallel.

Guvnor into the BDDI on a mild setting gives a nice variation, my fuzzes (and bass and playing) are too gainy for any combination to work well.

The body is in plastic I think, but of the very sturdy kind. The switch is one of the smoothest ones I've got in a pedal. And the knobs are high and stiff enough (and well protected) so to not accidentally change settings while in the case or while tapdancing my fx.

..and I got it for €20/$27 on a blow-out

Happy user,
Herwig

I see mine as more of a distortion than overdrive. It's capable of getting quite smooth distortion with plenty of bit. However, on it's own you need to crank up the bass eq to compensate for lack of low end. It performs much better if blended with your clean signal.

I have no idea. The only thing I can tell ya is I saw a boutique pedal website that accepts trades in exchange for credit for their pedals. On the "want," list was The Guv'nor, and it had to be the older, original one. It may be a case like the ProCo Rats with the LM308 chip, and the new ones that sound like Ray Romano. "Same" pedal, but different sounds due to a different, cheaper, circuit.
