I got one and it is the best Sansamp alike for the money.

Simple to use and get a good sound out of, good size & solid construction. Suits both active and passive basses just fine.

The old DOD Bass Grunge is fantastic though, and it's well within your budget. |

Also, the Danelectro French Toast is a pretty cool pedal, and costs about $40 new. I've read that some people notice a lot of low-end loss with it, but I haven't noticed it much with mine. It does, however, get TOTALLY lost in the mix with a couple of loud, distorted guitars. It is a fairly mid-scooped sound, even more so than my Russian Big Muff Pi. |

I have one that I got for 15 bucks used, I almost got rid of it at first, but after a bit of playing around I found it had some great tones, especially when coupled with an EQ unit to help retain some low end.
I'd say check out craigslist every day, you can find some great deals on there, and you can usually try stuff out before you actually buy it.
