jeez bongo you're making this so hard to not be involved...

I may in the future want a preamp unit to shape and push my signal through my rig.

While my amp sounds good it may be good to have quality preamp circuitry to plug my passive J into.

I noticed a lot of people are accustomed to making them a part of their rigs and after hearing from a few sources that most good preamps sound great and can dial in similar tones, I was curious if a sonic maximizer (in the BBE) would make the Acoustimax a better preamp tool than the ToneHammer.

I figured that a good preamp/drive would give me some of the same flexibility that having active pickups would account for...the TH is based on the OB-3 if I've read correctly.

Is the Sonic Maximizer really worth having in my chain, and if so does the tonehammer sound that much better to drive me to just get a stompbox sonic maximizer?

Ok for starters, I think the Accoustimax is an Accoustic Guitar stompbox, so it really isn't designed to be a bass preamp. To be honest I'm not even sure you would hear the difference that the Sonic Max would off, so I would say stick to the Tone Hammer. If you insist on having the sonic max effect, perhaps get the Tone Hammer and the Sonic Maximizer pedal if money and board space allows.

And the ToneHammer is basically and Aguilar OBP-3 3-band PreAmp in a box, with the added bonus of being able to add in grit/overdrive via the AGS function.

Which is why i was thinking about the tone hammer, as my bass will be passive.
