This was meant as a compliment!

A trombonist from a great signed punk band agreed to track some trombone for our next EP after we opened for them last week. So we sent them some bounces and I trekked over there with my mobile recording rig to put him on the EP. And got the weirdest compliment:

Of our most recent material, he said 'It's like Muse playing reggae'. Then when he saw my face he quickly added 'I mean in a good way!'.

=D

I meant to credit the Talkbass FX forum but I was a little bit busy trying not to be sick.

I was a bit stoked tbh, I was just glad none of the rest of the band heard him because they would've fired me.

He also congratulated me on including an Ab dim chord in a punk song (which I had to teach our guitar player how to play) which again I was glad nobody was around to hear. Great musician anyway and we got some excellent trombone takes out of him.

Muse
Reggae

In my opinion, both are appropriate words to use to describe good music. Even together. Bravo!

I'm still trying to wrap my brain around the concept of a punk trombonist!

Hmmm, it works in ska punk. As a trombone player, I have to say that it can be an underrated instrument at times.

He was talking about tunes newer than the ones we're putting on the next EP. I was quite chuffed, it meant he'd listened to our set when we opened for them the weekend before and actually remembered some stuff.

The next EP sounds quite dub mostly, and there's a post-punk 'Ruts' style tune on there, and another with a ska beat and an Ennio Morricone-style breakdown in the middle with a mute trumpet funeral procession going on, and a live acoustic track that sounds a bit like a '60s rocksteady group, god knows when we'll finish it though...

What I'm not surprised by is that it was the bassist that had the mobile recording rig and had to go do the session!

One of the best bands I got to see included a trombone and ahh................welll......................errr thats it a trombone and a singer. They were awesome and rocked like you wouldn't believe. The singer was a huge black lady and a little skinny white dude on trombone. You had to be there to experience that. I want a trombone in my band.

Unfortunately, bass players tend to be the mothers in the band family.

There are 999 trombones at the gates of Hell, each one playing a different note (microtonal). The sound is quite hair-raising...(I've heard the sound of it approached in Tibetan ritual on the Hrang-Dung horns)
Of course trombone is punk, but punk after they learned how to actually play their instruments. You don't want a lousy trombonist, and most people these days don't know how great trombone can be. Manglesdorff/Pastorius/Mouzon anybody?
