Memory Boy/Toy vs MXR Carbon Copy ?

Sign in to disble this ad
Looking for a good analog delay to work well with my bass.....and the occasional time that I play guitar ( I am a bass player first and foremost).
Although I have a large pedal board, for some reason I have just never played with a delay pedal...so this will be my first. Not sure if I need the modulation on the memory boy, really just want a delay...although I guess they couldn't hurt.

Any opinions which is the better pedal between the two? Has anybody been able to compare the two ? Is the additional cost for the carbon copy justified ?

i have a memory boy... from what i hear the MB is darker and warmer sounding than the MT.. which can probably result in more muddiness for the bass in the MB than the MT i'm guessing. i havent tried the MT yet so i don't know from my own personal experience.

but either way, i'd probably go for the MB because it's more versatile. i originally got the MB for the delay, but i find myself using its chorus/vibrato and the triangle/square wave modes a lot. the MT i think is just purely delay.

i'm very happy w/ the MB and i'd probably suggest the MB over the MT even if i tried the MT.

I love the Carbon Copy, but can't compare the two.

If you've got an extra couple of inches (fnar, fnar) on your board and you can wait a couple of months, the Deluxe Memory Boy looks like a good bet.

I'd suggest trying them both because lotsof people here like both and will most likely just tell you to try the one they have owned. The main thing to consider is they are generally both well liked. The only complaints I've really seen for both are when they are faulty or from people who should be looking at digital delay.

I like the sound of the CC over the Memory series. The modulations on the Memory boy/toy sound silly to me. My personal recommendation is the Malekko 616 though. It's 150$ as well. It's a true analog sounding delay.

I went for the Memory Toy, mainly because I'm new at delays and it fit my crowded board. I use effects mainly to season parts of songs, so delay is a useful tool. I did read somewhere also it is a little "treblier" than most delays (I play 5 string bass through 2 15 inchers, so I can use it). Did not try the other 2, but anything EHX-stamped has sort of a cult-status around here and I heard good things about the MXR. Only knock off I have against MXRs are that adaptor input for most pedals (or all) is on the side. Other people might find that a plus, so it always comes down to what you want/need/afford.

To the OP. I am in the same boat as you. I am leaning toward the MB. The CC looks cool too. Both seem like winners to me!

The Boy is super sweet. And I just tried out a Toy last night. It was cool too!

I tried a toy and really liked the sound, the repeats are much brighter than I expected.

My only complaint was that the mix knob didn't really give me much room to work with - anything past 2 o'clock is too goofy for me, leaving the useable part of the dial pretty touchy
