Messing around with a 5150...

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey everyone, kind of a weird question here. I was pretty bored earlier today and decided to see what kind of bass tone I could get using a Peavey 5150 II through a GK Neo 4x10. Surprisingly, it sounded pretty nice and it got me curious.

Could I try and use the preamp section of the 5150 and run it through the power section of my GK 1001 rb II? Would I need to do something with the load from the power section of the 5150? I just don't want to damage anything so if anyone has any tips or warnings please let me know.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

PS. I wasn't sure where I needed to post this. I hope this section is ok.

It's about amps.... so I think it's supposed to be in Amps.

I've used the line out of my Peavey Triple XXX without a load on the power amp. For recording purposes, it's been no problem. Peaveys have massively overbuilt output transformers, so I don't expect I'll ever damage the amp itself. I don't gig with it that way, though.

Just what I said. Peavey tube amps have been shipping with transformers capable of handling way more than the wattage they're rated at for decades now.

Do you have another speaker cabinet? You could use the crossover on the GK to split the signal and run the mids/highs to the Peavey.

Or just use a dummy load like Mammoth said.

you should never use an amp that has an output transformer without a speaker cab or dummy load no matter how massively overbuilt it is.
