Metal Bassist...whats next for gear?

Sign in to disble this ad
I am a metal bassist in a band called Wotan's Apotheosis. We play a variety of metal, a good mix of Power Metal, British New Wave (Iron Maiden), Thrash and Progressive metal. My current gig kit consists of the following

Basses - 2010 Ibanez SR400QM
- Unkown year Yamaha RBX 374

Amp - Yorkville BM200

Other - (Compressor) - DBX 266XL Compressor/Gate
- (Wireless patch) - Samson 77

Any suggestions on what could be added, why you think it would be a benefit, etc. (also looking more for rack mounted not pedals for effects and such)

Yeah dont know what kind of grit you get out of the Yorkville, but personally I like fizzly distortion/overdrive. However it doesnt fit everywhere...I wouldnt just go out and buy equipment for the sake of new toys (not that I dont do that haha) but best thing you can do is think about this question when you're practicing, and think of what some new effect-ware can add to the sound.

+1 and +1. Your guitarists don't have amps? Yorkville makes some good stuff, but you're gonna need a bigger boat.

Master Luthier: Ironclad Bass Guitars

Amp: Hartke, Mesa or GK with an 8x10 and or 4x12

Pedals: Preamp (I would suggest the Hartke Bass Attack or MXR M-80)
Distortion (the preamp will handle overdrive, so I'd pick up a distortion for a stronger clipping section)
Wah
Chorus (good for textured clean sections and thickening up overdriven sections)

Can anyone elaborate on WHY the Sansamp Bass DI is such a benefit for metal? I'm kind of in the same boat as the OP and anxious to obtain a couple of new pieces of gear.

I'd take the tech 21 VT deluxe over bass DI for metal because of MIDS. It also gives really nice grit and an optional DI for the sound man

My Metal Rig in order:

5 string Warrior DM5 Custom >

Hartke VXL Bass Attack >
(nice scoop, killer attack and bite)

Sansamp Bass DI 3 button prog >
(the 3 program buttons kill, tons of sounds)

Aguilar AGRO pedal >
(awesome modern metal grit and growl)

** i use the hartke for the scoop and the attack tone; the 3 sansamp buttons for (1) clean solo/boost (2) mild boost & overdrive (3) big overdrive; the AGRO for modern distortion (albeit NOT used in conjunction with Sansamp it sounds shrill)

Morley Bass WAH > amp input

T-Rex bass chorus (eff loop) >

Laney Nexus 400w all-valve >
Twin Schroeder 215BMF Series II
