A method for dampening notes!?

Hi guys,

Im just watching this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFfex...3&feature=plcp.

He offers an interesting idea at 1:55 about how vintage bass players used a sponge under the strings. Has anyone else tried this? I have a modern Jazz bass, and want to get nearer to a more vintage sound. Id be interested to hear your comments.
Thanks
