Metronome

Sign in to disble this ad
My band really like to rehearse with a metronome. Problem is some of our songs have tempo change mid-song. Im just wondering if there is a metronome out there where you can set a BPM for X amount of bards/cycles and then set it to change to another BPM after that automatically. If not, is there any other tricks we could use? Thanks.

Get a really cheap drum machine.

You don't need any fancy sounds, but it needs a good sequencer that will switch tempos (not all drum machines do this).

You will end up listening to the metronome and not to each other. Not good. Metronomes are for individual practice.

Have you ever used a metronome in a group setting?

No no, the drummer will plug headphones into the metronome and then play to them. Then when hes playing in time, the rest of the band will play in time.

Imo you will not benefit much from this. You should concentrate on each other and make the music feel good. Playing in time is not the same as groove and good feel.

if your drummer needs metronome to play in time, then it's time to change the drummer.

edit: anyway - use some simple soft [eg. reason] or drum machine to program 1/4 bar clicks, export to mp3, transfer on a mp3 player, earplugs etc.

For the record. My drummer is not a novice player. He is a professional, and likes to play professionally. Meaning he likes to rehearse the songs to a metronome. He doesnt need a metronome, he just prefers it.

Its great to play and rehearse to a metronome, a real drummer can play to a metronome and still play with feel and groove. They'll sure need to in the studio.

Your best bet is to get some DAW on a laptop and do it on there, eg garageband etc. They normally let you set the tempo different halfway through. I'm not sure of any hardware solutions.
