Michael Ivins (Flaming Lips) effects???

Does anyone know what effects he uses? Embryonic (one of my favorite albums of the year and the best thing the Lips have done in a long time, IMO) has some amazing sounding distortion that I don't think I've ever heard before, and awesome tone. Really underrated bassist, too.

I couldn't tell you what the effect was (I don't really listen to post-Zaireeka Lips), but I suggest that you take a bunch of acid and come back to your rig 30,000 light years later.

yup, he uses all Boss stuff live. Most of the cool Lips bass tones are key boards. Also, Wayne Coyne plays a lot of the bass on the albums. They do a lot of role changing on albums and then simplify things for the stage.

The Lips are big Roland fans so the Boss effects make sense. Live is completely different then what they do in the studio since Steven Drozd actually plays alot of the instruments on the record. The biggest influence on their sound has to be producer Dave Fridmann.

That studio is chock-full of "futz boxes". Tons of little weird amps and cool old rack units. Funky old radio mics - you name it. I was there a few times during Zaireeka sessions and they didn't have much of their own gear there - just guitars and an old synth. Super nice guys, btw.
