Not sure how many Phish fans are here, but I was listening to the Denver show from last night and during Harry Hood, Gordon had a ridiculous synthy tone at times throughout the song. Anyone know how he is getting that? I would love to have that option when playing with my band.
My guess would be either the deep impact or I know he just added a source audio multiwave bass distortion. Maybe that, octave pedal and either the meatball filter or source audio filter he recently added.
Anyway he does it, some of the sounds he gets are just nasty...that bass line to start 2001 on night two almost made me soil myself
As posted earlier it could be the deep impact but he he also has the bass envelope filter pro, that in combination with the multiwave might be the sound you’re hearing. I'll have to take a listen later to try and determine which it is.
It's probably a combination of a lot of things. His tone is monster and his playing is great. He's got the Quantam 5, Eden head, Meatball, Deep Impact, Source Audio BEF and Multiwave Distortion. He also plays with a pick. From what I've read on Phantasy Tour he's also got his effects rigged up to some kind of board that engages them in combinations (not sure what it's called but I've seen one for sale on the classifieds here).
I suggest you check out the youtube demos for Source Audio Bass Envelope Filter Pro and Multiwave Bass Distortion. There are 3 Akai Deep Impact synth pedals on the classified of this forum right now. There is/was also a Meatball. The Deep Impact and the Meatball are gonna run you over $500 each but both Source Audio pedals new will run you $440ish.
Good luck!

Could be fuzz from the MWBDP plus one or more of the BEF Pro/Meatball/Deep Impact. The depth of it makes me think the BEF Pro with the Lo Retain maxed in the intro section; Mr. Minor sounds more like Deep Impact, because it's much synthier and less depth to it. And just to clarify the previous post, the Source Audio pedals will be $440 TOGETHER, $220 separately. And good luck finding either the Deep Impact or Meatball for $500. Recent ebay listings had buy it now at $1,000 for the Meatball and $800 for the Deep Impact. That switcher he has is pretty insane considering all the lines he has going into it, and the combinations it seems to have in just a tap of his foot. I wonder if Gordon even knows what combinations are used for the button marked "DWD" to get the Disease sound for the intro. Definitely one of the best tones and players out there!
The song Harry Hood shows up in the second set. It's just a short clip so obviously don't know if any other effects were used but on that segment the tone is absolutely from a Deep Impact.
Mike started using the Multiwave Bass Pro and BEF in June of 2010 (Hartford).
We swapped out the BEF for a BEF pro in June of 2011 (Mansfield).
He uses 2 to 3 presets on each. He would say that the retention of the low end is the thing that he likes most about these pedals. He also likes the EQ. With the Meatball he must have a dedicated EQ in the effect loop to get the right tone.
I will ask Will to listen to the clip and pass some judgement on the tones and where they came from.

The lower octave in the bass effect in Harry Hood makes it sound like a Deep Impact to me. As for 2001, it sounds like he's actually starting off with a Deep Impact and then he gets all hairy with it by bringing in some Singleband Normal Distortion from the Soundblox Multiwave Bass.
slightly off topic- but theres bass player thread developing on phantasy tour... started with stasik vs brownie but now gordons in the mix too... some of ya'll might wanna weigh in
I've got a MWBD Pro, and I believe my next pedal will be the BEF Pro. Mike is certainly my biggest inspiration, and part of that is just how freakin' awesome his filters and synths sound. Gives me goosebumps.
Anyone have any new clips of the two Pro pedals at their finest?

haha... STAY AWAY FROM PHANTASY TOUR. Its the 4CHAN of music.
There is no doubt about that, personally I don’t spend very much time on there. It’s a bunch of nonsensical discussions and irrelevant pranks, people with strong opinions with no actual evidence to back up their unfounded arguments- BUT it can be entertaining. Also rumors (of tour dates, unrealeased material, and underground shows) get leaked there all. I’d rather discuss these bass players merits here
