Mod the hold function on SYB-5/BSY-600?
I have both the Boss SYB-5 and the Behringer BSY-600, they are both great, I have them set to different sounds in my rig. The hold function is cool, but it is less useful than it could be since you have to keep your foot on the pedal to keep the hold going - once you release, it stops. So there's not much else you can do while it's holding, unless you happen to have three legs, or maybe are sitting down.
Does anyone know if there is a way to mod either of these pedals so that you can let go of the pedal once it's set, and tap again to stop the hold? That would make this function far more useful.
This was discussed in the rehousing of the BSY-600 thread but never came to fruition (cough, cough; my fault) but the idea was to rehouse it into a larger box and add a second SPST which locked in parallel to a momentary SPST switch, one for holding notes and one for bypassing the pedal, respectively.
The main problem with rehousing though is that the jacks are soldered on pretty solid. It took me forever to get them off and after that I did a bad job at it. DannDubblewe was the first person to post a good rehousing of this pedal (beautiful etching as well) and he pointed out the difficulties. He has a lot of experience but confirmed how difficult it was to remove the jacks, and also pointed out some difficulties with removing the pots.
Best of luck and keep us posted.
Well I found the thread with the rehouse of the BSY-600: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f36/re...23/index3.html
That guy does amazing work.
However as you say, the 2-switch mod never materialized, at least in that thread.
There are a lot of comments on the difficulty of deconstructing the Behringer parts, I wonder if the Boss SYB-5 pedal is easier? It's more expensive, therefore less appealing; however I hope someone would do it just because it can be done...(not me)...
Part of me was hoping that the answer would be that there was a series of switch presses or something, entered as a code, that would unlock the desired behavior of the switch...
Moding a boss pedal is usually a lot easier, but I can imagine that the SYB-5 has surface mounted components will present their own problems. However, if you are just going to add something to the momentary switch, i.e. add a locking switch in parallel, it would not be too difficult to rehouse. I have rehoused a boss RV-3 so the jacks were top mounted and it was pretty simple to do. Just don't forget to cover the bottom of the replacement case so the circuit board doesn't short out.
