Moog Bass or Midi Murf

Sign in to disble this ad
looking for anyone that has one of these pedals or that has had prior experience with one of these pedals....

i am seriously considering getting a bass murf if i can find one i understand they do not make them anymore so i might have to get the midi one....

anyway if anyone can answer some questions i have...

i really get the idea behind it but have a few specific questions...

are the patterns just different rhythms the pedal runs your signal through?
are the patterns all the same length?
do patterns always start from same point?
is the mix a strict dry/wet can you take the pattern out and just have your clean signal go through the freq filter?

thanks

You can get a MIDI MuRF now that the Bass MuRF has been discontinued. With the MIDI version you can download a pattern editor and go wild with as freaky or simple a pattern as you want. The presets that come with the pedal are very good and yes, you can run your signal through without using a pattern, just the filters which is what I do most of the time. I got this pedal brand new used on ebay and it's taken on a "never sell" status. Just love it. The filter sliders can give you endless sound variations, not in a synthy way but by boosting certain frequencies. Different sounding than an EQ pedal. Really beefs up the bottom when using just the low end sliders.

I owned a Bass Murf for a while and even did some recording with it, very cool pedal.

1. The Murf has a built-in sequencer that cycles through the different filters represented by the sliders. The different patterns control which of the filters (sliders) it selects at each step in the sequence.

2. No, some of the patterns are 8 steps long, some are 16, and I think some are even longer. They are all laid out in the manual, which you can get online.

3. Do you mean do they always start on the same slider? No, each pattern is different.

4. Yes, the mix is strictly wet/dry. But yes, you can take the pattern out and just use the sliders like fixed filters. That is one of the patterns (pattern 1 on bank A I think)

Yeah, the new Midi Murf is both a Bass Murf and a Guitar Murf. They didn't leave out the low end, they just made it more versatile.

Yes it can, but you just need to get the plug that flips the polarity (all of the Moogers are center-positive)

I had the Bass Murf and a Ring Mod as well--sold 'em. So much of the sound is fun for screwing around only and if you DO find a setting you like---good luck ever finding it again. Also, try doing a set with either one where you need to change a setting! Very expensive to have a "cool" Moog just to have it. I simply found them not worth the price for the limited use, the frustration.Nuff said.
Focus on what you need and go with a pedal to do it. I'd rather have 4-5 spot-on precise pedals than any Moog--ends up better IMO.

well i already have the pedals i need...
and none of the moog products seem limited in use they all have a lot of tweekable parameters with multiple ways of adjusting them including expression control over just about any function not to mention the added midi control now...

sorry you had a bad experience

I would go for the Midi MuRF if I was you. You could probably get a good deal on a used bass MuRF, but the ability to create your own patterns, have access to the mid range frequency centres, lfo on/off, and midi control makes the Midi version a better proposition imo.
The Moogerfoogers are great tools, very versatile, and you can coax a lot of very useable tones from them, and of course a lot of wacky stuff too. I have no problem recalling settings, or changing them live.

The MIDI MuRF also warms up your sound nicely. I've run it after pedals and keyboard synths and gotten some great results.
