Moog Freqbox: Before or after fuzz?

Sign in to disble this ad
I searched and even tried to PM fightthepower, but his inbox is full.

I just acquired a Moog Freqbox last weekend and got to play it for a bit at practice. Very impressed and have very high hopes for using this for CAVALE.

My amp is in the shop, so I have no way to mess with effect order ATM...all I can do is think about it, which sucks.

Currently, I have my order set up like this:
Korg Pitchblack Tuner -> ISP Decimator -> EHX H.O.G. -> Moog Freqbox -> Wounded Paw Blender -> GGG-tuned BMP -> Demeter Compulator

I can't find anything specific in the search or when Googling around about where the most popular placement is for the Freqbox. Should it be before fuzz, after fuzz, in the blender? Usually, I would just change the order around and play/test it out, but since I am ampless, I'm open to suggestions.

As a matter of fact, I use FB only in tandem with an EHX BiFilter and it is a perfect combo for me. Otherwise, I don't have really good experiences about using the FB with any fuzz.

You could try PM'ing Ron Now, he's got a Freqbox.

I really like a heavy fuzz hitting the bassMURF.
But that probably doesn't help you much.

Sorry.

I would fuzz the freqbox instead of freqboxing the fuzz. Never tried it tho.

Yeah sorry the inbox is full, need to renew my membership as it just expired and Im like 500messages over my limit..

It all depends on what you're using the fuzz and freqbox for. I use the Freqbox just as you would an oscillator in a synth.. so Im mostly going for the pure waveforms, and I keep the blend fully wet. I feed it a simple and compressed signal for ideal tracking.

With the Hard Sync on, the Freqbox is tracking the input signal and triggering the oscillator at the pitch of the input signal, and it resets every time a new note is played, so basically you're just hearing the Freqbox and not the nuances of the input signal (). Sure there are some slight differences, but playing the Freqbox with an OC-2, a bass, or a MIDI keyboard and hard sync off all sounds about the same.

If you're having tracking issues with your dry bass or HOG into the Freqbox, then some dirt or fuzz can actually help the tracking, and in this config you can use the Freqbox's 'Mix' knob to layer the dirt and waveform.. Without bringing new pedals into the equation, I'd keep things the way you have them, or experiment with a dirt between the HOG and Freqbox

I put fuzz after the Freqbox. The waveforms sound great under a fuzz, and can beef up an existing fuzz tone you like nicely. I like putting the Freqbox's sawtooth through the Devi Bass Fuzz. I find this configuration (freqbox into fuzz) to yield the largest sonic pallet.

Thanks, gentlemen. Whenever my amp comes back from Hell, I'll experiment and report back! (Maybe I will even do some videoz).
