Moogerfooger experience anyone?

Sign in to disble this ad
I am looking to build an arsenal of moogerfoogers. The LPF is a no-brainer for me, and has received numerous good reviews here. I am more curious about the Ring Mod, FreqBox and Bass MuRF. How do they handle bass signals, down to a low B? I'd hate to shell out $300-$500 for one of these pedals, only to find it isn't ideal for low frequency bass signals.

Thanks in advance.

I fiddled with the ringmod and freqbox once, and it handled bass signals down to low E (I only ever play 4 strings). I loved both effects, but if and when I buy them, i'll buy the LPF first. Only in combination with each other and the CP251 is it worth the massive amount of cash.

I think they have full frequency ranges since they are basically synth modules.

LPF is a must. Ring Mod is cool. Check out Squarephusher (Music is Rotten One Note, Ultravisitor) both those effects are all over that album and he play a 5 string Warwick.

Hahaha yeah the LPF seems to me the order of the day. Even Maki reccomended it above all else.

As for the frequency response, I recenly watched a video demo of the freqbox where the person said that it sometimes doesn't handle low frequencies well.

i have the lowpass filter and the bass murf.i learn something new on them everyday.every knob opens another door.push the drive and crazy things happen.ive had them about 8 months maybe and im far from having the murf figured out completely.no problems handling low frequencies in my experience.

ZOW that is a sweet board. Though I wonder why he has a MuRF and not a Bass MuRF.

HMMM Never noticed that before.....PM him and maybe he'll tell ya .

Those Moogerfoogers are instruments in and of themselves. You'll have to learn to play the pedal, but GD....I just love what those Bass MuRFs can do!!!!

I've actually got the exact same setup at funkyzeulon (I got the 104SD instead of the 104Z though)....everything moog does works great with bass. I have the Murf over bass Murf just because they had one in the store and I loved it. Didn't feel like waiting around for the Bass specific one.

Moog stuff is amazing, Ive never been unhappy with any of it in in any way.

I disagree.

I owned a Freqbox and my bass is almost permanently tuned ADGCF and can vouch that it can reliably track a low A. The IIRC, the manual states that when the Frequency knob is all the way counter-clockwise, it is at 25 Hz.

The one major thing you always need to keep in mind with the Freqbox is that the Frequency knob (or exp pedal if you're doing that) always has to be kept higher than the note you are playing. If you go lower, the VCO will completely drop out. This is just a limitation of the way hard sync works.

The left most slider of the Bass MURF is a shelving filter, so it handles bass frequencies fine. But you have to keep in mind that as it sequences through the pattern, it will bounce all around the spectrum, so it may sound as if you are losing lows sometimes.

I have owned the LPF and Bass Murf.

I found both to be less than useful. The Bass Murf has a cult following and is really only useful in "noise" or other electic ensembles. If you're into stuff like that, then it's a goldmine, if not, then it's not that useful.

I found the LPF to be hard to get good sounds out of. I am an envelope filter Junkie (i've owned a ton of them), and really did not like this one. I've read all the reviews and clips on how you can sound like Stevie Wonder's Left Hand. And found them all to be untrue. I could not find that drippy wet filter sound that so many say they have. Maybe it was my bass setup (old Fender jazz with flats) that inhibited the tone, but i could not find good tones on that thing to save my life.

i have the LPF and love it as a filter, but not as an envelope filter.

but then again, i don't really like envelope filters...

but as far as low pass filters go, you can't really get any more classic than the moog circuit.

I've got all of em except for the Bass MuRF. The regular MuRF is pretty cool in itself though, although it obviously cuts bass frequencies, but that's what the Mix control is for. They really shine when you combine them with a CP-251 (I just bought a Little Phatty, so I should be receiving a second CP-251 soon!) but basically I love them so much I've sold all my other effects. I plan on getting the Bass MuRF, a second Freqbox, and a second LPF, then my madness shall be sated. Now I just need to find the right rack to mount them all in...

The analog delay is the single best delay I've ever played. The amount of control you have over everything on the pedal is awesome. The drive and output are especially useful (IMO). The tone is as close to perfect as I've ever heard, and the internal loop is awesome with modulation, or the MuRF. Especially the MuRF...

I have the Freqbox, and love it. I tune to A#, and it tracks fine down there, no issues at all.
The one thing I will say about the 'foogers is they aren't the most reliable pieces of equipment you're ever likely to use. In my band, I have the Freqbox (frequency knob has ceased functioning, luckily I have the expression pedal to control the frequency for now), one guitarist has the Delay (it crapped out in the first month of ownership, but was replaced), and another guitarist has the Murf (one of the sliders has stopped functioning). I have heard that such issues are not uncommon. A pity, as the effects themselves are brilliant.

I trotted out my Bass MuRF for the first time at a gig last night. I basically set it up to sound similar to a flanger or phaser, and it sounded pretty good. Even tho I use TI jazz Flats there was still enough treble information for the pedal to make use of it.

Finding a real use for the MuRF as it seems to be intended requires a method for syncing up the Rate with the song tempo, which i have not succeeded in doing yet. i have a tap tempo switch for it, but I'd rather not have to pay that much attention to pedals in mid-gig. some day I hope to somehow trigger the MuRF Rate with a hi-hat signal, to lock the effect in with the drummer.

Rather than start a new thread, can someone plz detail how the Low filter in non-envelope mode sounds? I'm always fascinated how Geddy Lee's notes don't plink or boom on hard hits, but rather make a "Frowwwwmp!" sound like a wah, but more consistent.

Is that the sound of the low-pass filter with resonance? (Been reading about the ACG preamp which also has a resonance control.) Or does the resonance just give a generic, Van Halen "Jump" type sound--like Digitech's Bass Synth-Wah pedal?
