More Envelopes: Q-Tron Comparisons

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello Folks,
In an attempt to get ever so close to the sound of the great Mu-Tron, yet not break the bank, I've been looking at the various filters you guys have been using.

My question, between the many Q-Trons, are there any huge differences between the Original, The +, The Mini, and The Micro? (I think thats all of them, right?)

Are the latter versions just smaller and more compact? Or are the originals a bit more costly, but superior? And actually, how do the Q-Trons compare with the Maxon AF-9?

Your Info Is Appreciated. Thank You.

The "do a search" nazis will be along any second... but briefly- the QTron+ has its own effects loop and (I think) has an input gain level.

The MuTron used an analogue component called a vactrol and I believe the original QTron does too. The Mu has huge mojo but I hear that the Q is an improved design by the same dude. I forget the details now.

the Q-tron + XO is their newest recreation, its a lot smaller than the Originals. The Maxon AF-9 is said to be the same except have less of a volume spike and possibly a little more suttle.

I have done a search on the Q-Tron + XO and couldn't find out the definitive question of whether it's actually the same or similar circuit that's been rehoused and had a bell and whistle added or if it's a different beast that merely approximates the original.

The Q Tron + XO has no new bells or whistles at all. It's just the Q+ circuitry in a smaller box. Even has the same 24V power supply. I was hoping at least that would be re-designed so you could use a 9V PS.

I cant get a good sound out of the Maxon AF9. I can barley get it to do anything. Last night i lined up the maxon, emma discbob, dod, DT bsw and an ibanez sb7 and the maxon made the least amount of noise out of the lot. What am I doing wrong? There is only 2 sliders to play with. Anybody got any sugested settings?

Set the second slider to about 3/4 of the way up, put the range switch on low, the filter mode on LP and the direction to up. Then change the first slider until the effect comes through.

That's how I set it when I had mine - absolutely love this filter.

I love my Mini Q Tron. Its so simple and easy to set up.

Pros: very drippy, wet filter
retains your original tone and low end very well
easy to tweak and very touch sensitive.
9v, true bypass, no added noise.
tons of Mojo!

Cons: Its really large
has a slight boost in volume when engaged that is
actually a pain to deal with.

Cheers mate, but that's my old board! I've sold everything you see on there apart from the DT-10 and the Mutron!
