Let me know if y'all get tired of this, but I love OK Computer so much. This time around I'm particularly confused by some of the guitar sounds on Subterranean Homesick Alien. Namely that bit where one of the guitars (I'm not even sure which one) hit a note and it pitch bends while being delayed. I've thought of a couple different approaches, but none I've tried have worked thus far.

I tried using a Whammy (both O'Brien and Greenwood have one), but it always bends the pitch too quickly. The next idea is a really slow, deep chorus after or in the delay, but I don't have my DMM with me to try it. Otherwise maybe only the end notes of some phrases are sustained and they use a whammy bar on said note into a delay. Last theory is delay >> whammy which I haven't managed to try yet.

Ideas? Heck, even figuring out which guitarist is doing it would be grand (I thought it was O'Brien, but then I realized Greenwood is on guitar and not keyboard, so it really could be either or... both?)

I'm pretty sure it's Jonny using the Whammy. I believe the whole line is played while shifted up an octave (toe down on +1 octave); at then end of the phrase, he bends back down to the original pitch (heel down).

Not familiar enough with this track, but one way to achieve such an effect is by changing the length of the delay, on eg. a tape delay. this would cause the pitch to shift only as the delay time is in the process of changing. lengthening the time would lower the pitch, shortening it would raise the pitch.

Listen to the youtube clip. The notes aren't speeding up or slowing down so it isn't a delay.

I question Whammy >> delay because I can't get my whammy to move that smoothly or have the same shape sweep. I guess practice is the key here.

Is there a difference in sweep between the Whammy I and the IV?

I'm pretty sure Johnny's just using a Whammy (WH1) and a DOD 440, which is what the Bottom Feeder nee Analogue Filter is a clone of.

No, I think he's just good at it. I'm positive that it's a Whammy doing the pitch shift. You can hear that the notes have that "whammied" tonal quality, which is how I know that he's shifting them up and then back down at the end, rather than just using the octave down shift at the end.
