Smile More recession-friendly alternative to Maxon TOD-9 OD/dist pedal?

I use a Maxon TOD-9 for guitar. I tried putting it in front of my Sansamp BDDI and... ! It gives me clarity and character that EQ alone doesn't.

But my guitar pedal board is big enough and it'd be nice to have something just for bass anyway. The TOD-9 is a whopping $260. Any other good analog OD/dist pedals out there? The goal here is not so much distortion and fuzz (though it'd be nice to have that on tap), but sweetness, clarity, and midrange character.
