More than 1 Tech 21 Character Series Pedal?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm planning on nabbing a Genz Shuttlemax in the near future because I need the two channels and two effects loops for various reasons. My question is, does anyone think it would be worthwhile to get a couple Tech 21 Character pedals (say a VT & a Blonde) and put one in the loop of each channel to try and cop the tones of the amps those pedals emulate for recording purposes? Or am I just looking for an excuse to feed my pedal habit?

I dont see a reason not to. It would open up a lot of different options.

I say go for it

I think the Character Series pedals are great overdrive boxes for live use and recording. There is a lot of different magic happening in each kind. Feed the beast.

last year someone put up some sound clips of the blonde on bass and it had one of the nicest bass distortion sounds I've ever heard.

I've heard clips of the Leeds with bass and it too sounds pretty righteous.

There was a time when I had a Leeds and a VT. It was great for practicing, but it didn't make that much difference playing live. ..Or rather, it's not worth bringing both of them to a gig because nobody notices the difference or cares.

Side note -- I had to make a larger pedalboard to accomodate both T21 pedals with the rest of my arsenal and it made setup and teardown a more inconvenient process for me.

But you said for recording, so I think that would be a great idea! These pedals do a great job at capturing each amp's voicing. I had a vision where I wanted to have a Blonde, Leeds, VT, and British all on a pedalboard with no other effects. But my preferences changed and now I have a Submarine.

The Leeds is great, I loved using it for the Leeds tone (ie: the who, live at leeds - enwistles tone) I wish I had used it on guitar. Tried the Oxford on bass and didnt like it as much as the Leeds or VT.

For me the VT sounds the best for bass, the Leeds is really cool for attacky, harmonic overdriven clanklyness but sometimes I felt that it scooped something out of my tone and I usually spent more time tweaking that just loving the tone.

Might get one again one day.

Thanks everybody for the responses, and for probably making my wallet a little thinner in the future.
Another quick question for those that have experience with the character pedals: Seems everyone talks about the dirt sounds, but how well do you guys feel they cop the clean sounds? Like say for example I run through the Oxford, turn down the drive and up the treble a bit, will it sound nice, clean and "chimey"?
