MORE Z. Vex Box of Rock SOUNDCLIPS

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok I realized in my last thread that I didn't do any lighter gain clips of the Box of Rock. If you're interested in more heavy overdrive/distortion, check out this thread: Z. Vex Box of Rock SOUNDCLIPS
This thread is about the lighter overdrive you can get from the Box of Rock. I actually like these sounds better than the Comp Cut mode on the Bass-Drive for lighter gain, but that's just me.

The first clip is a picked riff in A on my Jazz Bass. I did this same riff for the Bass-Drive in Comp Cut mode in this thread : Fulltone Bass-Drive Mosfet SOUNDCLIPS so you can compare the two:

The second clip is some lightly overdriven thumping and plucking. I like it because it takes a mean sound and makes it even meaner:

The third clip is some heavy riffing. Same setting, but notice how I get more gain out of some heavier playing. The Box of Rock is very touch sensitive for a little pedal:

And for you people who prefer a gutsier overdrive sound, I did a couple clips with a Gibson SG Bass doing some Gov't Mule. For those of you not familiar with Gov't Mule check out this video to check out some rad SG Bass + tube overdrive tone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3OwL...eature=related Here's what the Box of Rock does with an SG Bass:

And here's with both pickups maxed for an even gutsier sound, sounds way more badass in person though:

I suggest you listen to these samples with a sub. Please let me know what you think!

Thanks. Also those are flats on the SG Bass, which is why it sounds a bit farty. Roundwounds would be more growly but still have that SG gutsiness.

I forgot to mention in this thread and the last one the recording setup. I've got a Fender American Deluxe Jazz Bass with passive pickups put in and D'addario rounds and a Gibson SG Bass (where noted) with D'addario flats through Dunlop 105Q -> Box of Rock -> Analogman Mini Chorus -> Ampeg SVT-3 Pro -> Ashdown ABM 115 Cabinet -> an SM57 -> an outboard soundcard plugged into my laptop. Suprisingly the 15 gets trebly enough for me, actually I think some of these clips might be a little too trebly. I had the tone knob at 12 o'clock on the Box of Rock so there's room to darken things up if you need.

Like I've said somewhere before, the overdrive sounds I can get out of this box are a lot like what I got out of an EBS MultiDrive, but much more transparent. There's also this thing that the MultiDrive does that annoys me, the sustain of the overdrive suddenly dies on held out notes, which isn't very natural. The Box of Rock is much more natural on sustained notes. I also didn't like the annoying treble cut that the MultiDrive has, or it's excess of bottom. I also found it a tad buzzy. Other than all that I thought it was a great bass overdrive pedal, and it seems to me all these problems are fixed with the Box of Rock.

Very nice sounds. But I'm wondering, are there any of these that you're playing with fingers? It all sounds like picked and I'd like to hear it with some fingers.

Thanks m8.

The max gain clip in the other thread is all fingers.
