Morley PBA2 + Big Muff Pi... yes?

Sign in to disble this ad
So I'm saving up to buy:

Morley PBA-2 Wah Pedal (£85)
EHX Big Muff Pi (£60)

Would I be right in saying this is the late Cliff Burton's equip? I absolutely love the sound he gets out of it, however I was wondering if there was anything better or cheaper that I could get?

I just wanna be certain I'm making the right choice.

Any suggestions would be great

Id say go for a different muff. AFAIK cliff did use the NYC muff, but there are many more suited to bass, check out:

EHX Bass Big Muff,
EHX Russian Muff
EHX Little Big Muff
Fuzzrocious Green Stache (*cough* shameless sales plug - pm me if you're interrested or check out the classifieds *cough*)

I've heard that the NYC sucks alot of lows and generally sounds abit too thin on bass. The Little Big muff is apparently the same circuit, but gets more love around here and is said to be better with the lows.

As far as Wahs go the Morley stuff gets alot of love, as does the Dunlop 105q *cough* shamless sales plug!! - same as above*cough*

damn this cough is bad, should really quit smoking

Best bet for the Cliff sound would be a green russian muff, and a Morley Power Wah. That's the closest you'll get to his Power Wah Fuzz or whatever it was he used. I had this setup awhile back and it totally did the Cliff sound.

I heard that the bass big muff is a little less aggressive compared to the nyc big muff, but I havn't heard much about the little big muff.

As for the 105Q, I havn't heard much good about it personally. I have heard nothing but good about Morley wahs.

If anyone can shed light on whether the little big muff is better than the normal NYC model, I'd like a response.

Many thanks

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I should point out that Cliff Burton and his effects have been discussed numerous times before. A quick search will pull up a lot of helpful threads.

Regarding the wahs - if you really want a Burton-style non-funky roar, then the 105Q is the opposite of what you want. However, it's still a great bass wah, and many famous bassists use it.

As far as tone goes, the reissue Power Wah sounds closest to the old chrome Power Wah Boost which Burton had. The Dual Bass Wah has a decently close tone for the job in Traditional mode, but it doesn't have the range of the old chrome ones. I do really love the Dual Bass Wah, though, because unlike the Power Wahs, the Dual Bass Wah is far more bass friendly.

The Little Big Muff seems better to my ears for bass than the normal NYC model (a tad creamier, a bit more low end), but I wouldn't hesitate to consider a Bass Big Muff instead, as it's more versatile and bass-oriented. Plus, the main ingredient to Cliff's solo tone is the right wah, so I wouldn't stress about having a Muff that matches exactly.

Personally, I'd rather have great-sounding versatile pedals than the exact setup Burton had. I'd suggest going with a Dual Bass Wah and a Bass Big Muff. Then you can cop that sound without being trapped in it.
