Morley PWV help

Sign in to disble this ad
so i got a used Morley PWV on craigslist a little while back, and whenever the wah is turned on, my tone sounds very muffled and muted. it's especially noticeable when i have my Big Muff on (it's placed right after the Big Muff, btw). it's a shame because i really like the volume part of it, and my tone sounds fine when the wah isn't on.

does it have a reputation of muffling the tone when the wah is on or is something wrong with the pedal? either way, i think i'll keep it just for the volume part. i got it for a pretty good bargain anyways...

Is the wah resting in the down position, so that you are cutting all the highs? I think the Morleys are set up reverse from how the Crybaby is set up - forward should equal bass, and treble is back.

the toe down gives the treble "wah" effect, and i guess that sounds fine. it's when the toe is up that it gets all muffled

Ah, you're new to Morley, then... that's what it does.

Seriously. It has an incredible range of tone alteration, and that's what it's supposed to do when it's toe up! It screams with treble when toe down. What you have is a perfectly normal Morley Power Wah.

What were you expecting?

It's why many people love the Morleys... but as you have experienced, they are FAR from "normal" sounding. That's their charm.

ah, well thanks for clearing that up... i was initially planning on getting a Weeping Demon since i've heard great stuff about that, but then i found this on craigslist for $20 so i figured i might as well...
so i guess i'm just not a fan of the Morley sound. i guess i'll keep it as a volume pedal for now and get the Weeping Demon eventually. although i do kinda like the "screaming" sound of the Morley. hmmm... i actually wonder what it would sound like with 2 wahs going at it at once...

Try this: Muff before Power Wah.

Classic Cliff Burton.

Careful, though - it gets crazy!

I had a the same Morley PWV paired with a Big Muff. It worked great for doing the anesthesia/orion/bells and with the toe up paired with a sansamp it made a good Basically solo from NIB tone. With out the distortions I felt it was to extreme of a change going from toe up to down. I now use the Weeping Demon myself, it's much more controllable.

One thing to note is that the Morley Dual Bass Wah is much more controllable and generally better suited for bass than the Power Wah models. So if you want that scream, but not as piercing, with more low end, and more "depth" and "oomph" overall, the Dual Bass Wah is worth considering. Plus, it's switchless, which I find to be a plus.

But again, it's no Crybaby. I still would hesitate to use any Morley for funkier stuff, but I think it's right at home in a rock mix.

OK I have nothing useful to add to this forum, but to the OP: Do you live in Santa Cruz? I think I saw that exact pedal that you got on Craigslist here, only it was for $15. I was going to get it, but I unfortunately forgot.

If you feel like selling it though (and are in fact in the SC area), I think I'd like to grab it though!
