Hey guys,
I'm changing up all of my effects and am wondering what opinions you have regarding envelope filters? I'm after something that is very tight and punchy and remains fairly bright also. I mostly play hard rock and would like something just for odd occasions, as suits. I currently have an EHX Nano Bassballs, but no other filters. I do also have a EHX Bass Big Muff Pi and Boss DD-20 (pretty small list I know, I just sold most of my pedals) and will be adding a Tech 21 VT Bass Deluxe, Tech 21 XXL Bass, MXR M288 bass octaver and MXR M148 chorus soon also.
I quite like the sound of the MXR M82, especially with the dry blend option (and they seem to sound great with the M288).
The EHX Enigma Qballs looks cool too (& I could replace my Bassballs) but it sounds a bit more dull and pillowy from the sound clips I've heard.
As it's an effect that I won't use too frequently I'd like to keep it to under $200.
I'd greatly appreciate any and all opinions.
Thanks in advance!
Brenton.

It can be dialed in just right with a nice burp, stays clean and doesn't throw any volume spikes (unlike all the others I've tried). Add some overdrive when needed and you're all set. I have the original, haven't tried a GR2. They go in the $150 range on the classifieds here, sometimes lower, which makes them a steal in the filter world.

But I haven't heard any of the new ones so I can't say how they sound.
I'll never get rid of my big, old one though. I'll tell you that.

I've tried out quite a few filters and the M82 still scares me when I stomp it, lol. The thing just sounds mean, and I love it! Unfortunately, being a bandpass filter, it doesn't pair well with fuzz or distortion (at least when they are in the chain before it). If it had a lowpass option... things could get real crazy in the best way possible!

| | Brenton Comerford | | | | | Thanks guys. It's sounding like I go the M82 and keep my Bassballs and do the trimpot mods too. Any suggestions anyone on a prefered setting to tweak them to?

| | Brenton Comerford | | | | | Yeah, not a fan of the Mu-Tron's, despite the massive popularity. Very funky, just not what I'm after.

Its also pretty cool to have a built in distortion and the fact that you can delay the sweep makes it really versatile, it can sound really synthy if you add a Micro Pog in the chain! |
