Most useful pedal(s) for under $100

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm currently in the proccess of buying pedals to flesh out some sort of pedal board now that I've decided on the bass I'm going to be getting and have plenty of amplification for even the biggest of venues in my town and most of the surrounding area. Including my new bass (a used Fender Jazz (less than $300 hopefully)) my budget is around $600-$800. I would like to get some pedals to expand my musical possibilities. I'm in a hard rock/metal/punk band and I'm also in a funk group if that helps at all. I already have a Boss Bass Overdrive and a EH Bassballs.

Help fuel the burny fire that is my GAS.

The EHX Bass Big Muff Pi is in that price range and is a really excellent fuzz, which is often useful in hard rock.

Oh man, you have no idea for under 100!

Well, sometimes that Envelope Filter isn't going to do all your wah'ing for ya.

I'd suggest going with a Crybaby 353Q (If I remember correctly, it's cheaper than the 105Q bass wah, and it works more or less just like it) and the DigiTech Bass Multi-Chorus pedal would be great for doing clean stuff, such as bass solos, intros and such.

But playing Punk, Metal, and Hard Rock there's not much else you need (Unless you're someone like Tool or Muse or so, haha.)

Muffs are versatile!
Clean boosts can work in both types of bands.

Delay is great too, but that's going over $100.
Look into the 1st 2 for sure.

Which model of the Big Muff would teh general concencus agree is the 'best' for bass. I know the bassist in another popular local band who uses the Black Soviet version (then again he does use a behringer 4x12 guitar cab for bass), though I've heard good things about the bass version of the muff.

Also I realize it would've been useful to say that in my band a few of our songs (mosre and more as we continue writing) feature sections where both guitarists are playing lead lines up in their guitard octave and I need something that can hold down the bottom behind them quite often. I like to think of our music as at least fairly similar to A7X. Johny Christ has become kind of the mold I try to fill most of the time. Although, I do like to play a bass and drum version of Hysteria in the few 15-30 second gaps we have after a song when one of the guitarist breaks a string.

I personally like flangers alot. Check out the Boss BF-2 on ebay. If you're willing to spend $180 on an amazing pedal, get a Crowther Audio Prunes & Custard on MusicToyz.com. The P&C is a beast on wheels!

Just making sure on that one. I wasn't sure how people have felt about it. I don't come around these forums too often. I've been in the basses section more often than not recently.

My favorites in the cheaper price range are the Guyatone Micro series. The Fuzz and the Delay are great for the money.

Did you mean to say best tracking octaver on a budget rather than on a setting? Because both of the POGs are far superior as far as tracking goes.

I've looked at the Digitech, but in my experience Digitech's pedals sound a little too digital for my tastes. Sounding a little digital is not a huge deal, but I like my sounds to be fairly organic. Does the synth/wah/coffee maker/gizmo sound too digital?

Quite honestly, I just go by ear and I can only tell a difference in digital and analog in stuff like pitch shifting.

But the Synth Wah sounds great to me. The only thing is, is that you have to have a volume reduction with active basses, otherwise it's not going to follow your sound like it should. Especially if you play slap. Envelope Filters filter the frequencies of your sound based on volume, usually. But a ssmall drop on your volume knob can take care of it.

Check this out.

Morrison Audio Equipment.
All pedals are True Bypass, and hand-wired.

A delay UNDER $100 - well, this is close.
I've only heard good things - and looking to get a few myself soon. Let youse know how I go

My most useful pedal would be the Boss LS-2. Not an effect but a great tool.

an excellent tool to be sure. But it's of limited use when you don't have other effects. It becomes a glorified A/B/Y

They are really great sounding pedals...often regardless of price range depending on the specific effect.
I particularly like the OD2 overdrive (not the OD2+), and the Micro delay (MD-3).
The OD2 sounds better than a TS-9, IMO, and the MD-3 is one of the better sounding digitals without spending $400.

The downside of the Guyatone Micro series effects is that they are not the sturdiest built pedals out there....

Looking at the bang-for-buck ratio, Boss pedals are really hard to beat, IMO.
Look for used deals on them for even more value, and you could get a great versitile setup that'll do just about anything and should come in under your budget.
In my experience, pawn shops are the best places to find great deals on Boss pedals.

sixgunner - did you want me to read that or Wasted Bassist.

Why was I quoted?

Finding steals on Boss pedals is a good place to start. Good call.
