Mowtown Sound in a Pedal?

Sign in to disble this ad
Was trolling on youtube and found this:

YouTube - Catalinbread SFT: Quadrant #3, Motown Bass Tone

It must be brand new because they don't seem to have it on their website, but it sounds pretty damn cool on the video!

Anybody know more about it, tried it?

Yeah, not to be a search sergeant, but there are countless threads on the SFT, which is a very popular pedal. Also, here is the direct link to the SFT page on Catalinbread's site.

Wrong Pedal Holmes, The SFT Quadrant #3 isn't an overdrive, you didn't follow my link.
I did a search, thanks though.

Dude, yes it is. This is the same pedal believe it or not. YouTube - Catalinbread SFT: Quadrant #2, Video A, Stoner Volume Worship

The reason it can get the different tones is because its based of an old Ampeg tone stack. Warm or dirty it can do. Supposedly.

"Mowtown" -- is that where all the broken lawnmowers go to retire?

They named each of their videos different... not a new pedal.

As others have noted, there's only one SFT pedal.

But for what it's worth, I had much better luck getting a MoTown sound with both the OLC Flipster and the VT Bass, though I actually prefered the Flipster for that sort of tone.

Actually, the closest I ever got to a Jamerson type tone was using a P-bass into Creation Audio Labs Holy Fire and Retrospec Squeeze Box, but for a one pedal solution I'd go Flipster or VT Bass before SFT. As always, YMMV.

I found the opposite, SFT over the VT and Holy Fire for Motown any day. Never tried the Flipster though.

That would've sounded a lot more convincing on a bass strung with flats, with some foam wedged under the strings. Much cheaper than an SFT too.

The pedal has 4 knobs... did you stop to consider they might be used to dial in different sounds?

Although it doesn't seem like it would be used for this, my Tronographic Rusty Box cops a great Motown vibe on low gain settings with the top end rolled off a bit. Throw some flats or dead rounds on your bass and you'll sound like Jamerson in no time... Well... Aside from the playing
