The MT-2, HM-2/3, ML-2, MD-2, RAT 2, Death Metal and Grunge Megatest Thread

So, after acquiring a Metal Zone, I have discovered I have a fetish for guitar distortion pedals on bass.

It began, I guess, those many years ago, late one night, when I plugged my friends borrowed DS-1 into a headphone amp and then into my Squire MB-5. The soudn that came out was heavenly, and I was saying to myself "This! This is it!"

Fast-forward to now. After those years and times of being told "No one uses distortion on bass" and "you're just a guitarist who wishes he was a bassist" (the hurlers of those insults lived, by virtue of the fact that both times I had no place to hide the bodies ) I've come to embrace my love of high-gain grind, produced by pedals that the thin-stringed set usually enjoy.

And, with my recent acquisition of a Metal Zone, I've made a list of similar distortion pedals to test out on bass. My list is in the title, but if you don't feel like reading the title, here goes:
  • MT-2 Metal Zone
  • HM-2/3 Heavy Metal/Hyper Metal (they're the same circuit, different name)
  • ML-2 Metal Core
  • MD-2 Mega Distortion
  • Proco RAT 2
  • Proco Turbo Rat
  • Digitech Death Metal
  • Digitech Grunge
  • DOD Thrash Master (if one can be located)
I'll be doing reviews and posting the video links, along with some sound clips & stuff, once I get some sort of set-up for doing that buisness. Sort of A la Grygrx's BassFuzz.com, but just with those listed pedals.

But first I have to aquire the pedals, and that'll be what takes the longest. But, I promise, for the members of the βΘИΞКЯŲŜĦÏИĞ® Club as well as the other Denizens of the effects forums, that they will be done.

i know bootsy uses the "grunge" and the "thrash" and you should add the thrash.

i would love to hear clips/reviews of both. i'm a big fan of bootsy.

DOD Super American Metal
DOD Metal Maniac

I has all of these.

i used a grunge the other day in practice as a joke. with the gain all the way down, it was too much haha. lots of bass loss, but it can be added back in just fine on the pedal. kinda synthy. useable. i instantly started playing "starlight" by muse.

while we're talking about oddball DOD pedals.. might as well try to find a punkifier, buzz box, and while you're ebaying away, their old fx90 analog delay is heavenly.

i also recommend trying the H&K warp factor in several applications. bass boost engaged of course. they are super cheap these days. everything from light drive to nu metal doom. the warp knob is a mid shift. only trouble with those is that the vintage click switch isnt real, and the other end pushes a plastic pin on the PCB

if anyone is particularly interested, i could demo mine. wouldnt know where to put it up exactly.. but id be glad to record it.

I'll subscribe to this.

I use a Metal-Zone on occasion too. That, with a Boss CEB-3 Bass Chorus can get you pretty damn close to that Peter Steele tone. Hell...for all I know, thats what he uses. I HAVE heard that he does use Boss pedals for alot of his tones.

The landmine is pretty Heavy too. It doesnt even have a gain knob. Its always at 11!!
Also, the Tech 21 XXL Bass Edition is pretty good.

(PS. Im too poor to actually own any pedals, but i go into my local mom and pop stores all the time to demo pedals. Im a high school student and have exactly 1.63 in my wallet. But i have a fetish for HEAVY Distortion. )

I almost bought the Thrash Master for 15 bucks the other day, but food was a little more important than a really horrible fuzz

You should also compare the DOD and Digitech Grunges.

I got my hands on a grunge a year or so ago, found it unusable because it was super compressed sounding and had virtually no bass response. Then I circuit bent it and got the meanest high-gain distortion box I've ever touched.

Also, don't forget the Deucetone Rat.

I did something real bad... I didn't wait for Thunder's clips, and bought something different. Just on a spur of the moment. Interestingly enough it turned out awesome....

Not to say that im not looking forward to clips tho
