Mu-tron III help needed

Sign in to disble this ad
So, I recently got a Mu-tron III for the second time, but I'm having a little trouble getting that great funky sound that the Mu-tron is famous for out of it. I either have to turn the gain up very high, or the peak up very high with lots of treble to get that wet sound out of it. I was wondering, is there some sort of additional pedal that will help with getting the sound I'm looking for? Or is my Mu-tron just having issues? Any help would be appreciated.

Are you using a passive bass? Usually on my filters if I have to crank the gain it means my bass needs more volume so I'll turn up my active bass' pre-amp. If I'm using a passtive bass I'll put maybe a volume pedal infront of it. Are you using a compressor in your chain? Sometimes I find compression before kills the dynamics a filter needs and after kills the bubbles and pops and sounds less wet but saves your speakers from the peaks.

Nope, my bass is active. No compressor either. it's really weird though... sometimes I get the perfect sound at one setting, and then later I have to completely change the settings to get the same sound.

OK guys, really weird. I've been noodling on my Mu-tron for the past 30 minutes and suddenly it started responding like it should! Hopefully it'll stay this way.

Yes I just copied and pasted this from my other thread.

I find the same thing with my 3leaf proton mutron clone. It's a little frustrating but when it happens it's magic! Each time I turn it on I have to readjust the drive.

peak should be maxed
it should be on UP
low for the bassy type funk, hi for the wet stuff
LP

peak should always be maxed.

I had similar issues, it was the power supply. Try it with batteries and see if the issue goes away. It's important to check sooner than latter as bad power can be bad for the pedal.

I sent mine to lsound with the same issue, beside a requested recalibration all he did was replace the wallwart.

With my active bass And nothing else in the chain my settings are:

Gain: 4-4.5
Range: High or Low
Peak: maxed
Filter: LP
Sweep: Up

Low range needs a bit more gain than High IME. Also, after you get the hang of it, you can make it fatter and more subtle (why do that?) and GR like by decreasing the Peak. The down sweep isn't bad but a bit dry.
