Muddy bass sound

Hey, I'm looking for the mud effect that plays on the bass in american army movies and games.

Two good examples are Black Hawk Down (When the crap hits the fan) and Modern Warfare 2.

Check at 4:25.

I know there's an octaver in there, that would make it resonate but for the rest, is it just extra low end? Lots of low, lots of mid, no high?

Sounds like an octaver with only the octave note being heard, and a bit of growl / grit either from the octaver or somewhere else. A Bass Octave Deluxe, Aguilar Octaver, or many others could do this, and I know it would be amazingly simple to do with my Line6 M13 and even control the mix of the octave to real note mix via expression pedal.

I don't think it's played on a bass...

Uhhh, you lost me.

I think it's played on a keyboard with lots of special effects, but since I play bass I'm looking for another way to make this sound.

My amp (Crate 220) has an integrated octaver so maybe I can produce something similar with it.

yeah a soloed -1 octave through a low pass filter should get you most of the way there

Wait wait wait.

If I recall, an Octaver will play the same note that you do but one octave higher right?

So a -1 octaver plays it 1 lower instead? What do you mean by soloed?

He means that if you have a pedal (like the boss OC-2/Pog) that will allow you to only allow and octave below to pass through, without dry, you will get part way there...

My Line 6 pod has synth patches that can achieve this. Check it out at GC
