Muff build problem

I finally got round to finishing my muff, but I can't find the 9v adapter for it. I just wanna check it works, so how would I wire up the battery clip for just battery power, send the negative straight to ground? Or wire it to the input ring? I'm building it to the GGG instructions here BTW.
