I'm looking for a multi efx unit that sounds decent and is under $300. Anyone have any recommendations ?

They all sound "decent" it's just the different features and options that separate the pack. Don't just check out the presets because for the most part they do nothing in the real world, look into the programming features. Go thru the individual effects if you can.
What features do you want/need?
>Boss/Roland is a classic choice
>Line 6 is the way to go if you need accurate amp and effect models
>Zoom if you are looking for more edgy sounds
>>Digitech has nice offerings as does Rocktron while Deltalab and Behringer offer nice budget starters.

I use Zoom because of the features, flexibility and sound but also rely on an old Digitech BP-8 for recording.

The efx I'm looking for are compressor, chorus, overdrive, distortion and octaver. Don't really care about amp modeling. I have a few stomp box pedals but want something that I can program the above efx's for different songs.

There are a couple of decent multi-effects processors out there. I have sound samples of many multi-effects processors on my soundclick website. here's the link.

SoundClick artist: Crystalman85 - page with MP3 music downloads

Feel free to check it out.

I'm also looking at getting a multi-effects unit. I'm leaning toward the Zoom B2.1u. It has a lot of features and looks like it is well made.

Good way to use a multi-effect. You might consider the Line 6 M9 if a compressor is really important, all of the others have compressors that can be useful for a song or 2 but may not do the trick all the time.

The Zoom B2 B2.1u comps are passable but not world class.

I do however love the compressor in the old Digitech BP-8.
