Multi vs. Single

Sign in to disble this ad
Yesterday I was rehearsing with my band for a gig with other 2 bands and I noticed that ALL the guitarrists were looking at the GT-8 (multi effect processor) like it was a pair of b...bs =/ and I thought that even if I had a 1000 bucks spent in single pedals it wouldn't have the same visual impact of a multi... I now that the important thing is the sound u can get from it/them but hey we are musicians we tend to have tons of eyes seeing us... so I guess the look of your pedalboard its also important, have anyone felt the same?

IMO looking at someone who has one multi-effects unit vs. looking at a guy who has 30 single pedals on a pedalboard...the 30 pedals look far more impressive.

I don't care much about looks when it comes to pedal boards as long as there are tidy.
The most import thing is function. This includes having the right pedals for your sound and the layout of those pedals. I for one use a Boss ME-50B along with an MXR M80 and an A/B switcher. That's all I need. It won't work for everyone and maybe in a year it won't work for me but for now it's great.
I don't use much as far as effects so having a multi works just fine.
Just figure out what you need and put it all together. Don't worry about what other people think. Impress them with your playing and your sound!

Staring toward a guitarist's feet as if they were boobs is a sure sign of sexual deviancy.

Not that there is anything wrong with that I suppose, but no, I've never once thought of the "image" behind the choice of multiple individual pedals v. one multi-effect unit.

When I see a digital multieffect I'm more inclined to leave before my ears are assaulted by horrible sounds.

No, some multieffects are ok but by and large I feel only ok at best.

Well , I love the look of a multifx , because it is clean and in one color.

But they do too much and a lot of what it does isn't so good.

I recently tried the GT6B and I found that I just need a good distortion , chorus and loop station. so I took single BOSS pedal. I feel I did a better choice.

I agree the look is important, sorry but I'm shallow

I personally think singles look better than multi's, but that's just me

If another TB'er comes to your gig, then a tidy pedalboard will get you way more street cred than any multi.

I use something like fifteen singles plus some larger "multis" (RC-50, GR-20). I gotta say, I love when people's eyes bug out at the sight of it. I actually have a few extra wires that don't attach to anything to make it look crazier.

Also, I'm thinking about xmas lights...

I used to play with a guitarist with a ME50 and my board with 5 measly pedals got far more compliments then his multi. There is just something about a good set of nice singles that people appreciate. Guitards on the other hand do tend to be amazed by large Boss multis. I have no idea what it is about them.

To me the Boss and Digitech multis look like cheap toys. That's partially just a sense memory from the 80's. The Line 6 stuff looks pretty cheap as well now that I think of it. I guess the TC Electric G system looks the best, or maybe Vox tonelab (but it's for guitar), for multis. For single pedals I'd say EH has the best look in production pedals, then there's the boutique look.
