Smile Muse bass effect

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi I am trying to figure out what bass effect is used on Starlight and Time is running out by Muse. It sounds like it might be a synth pedal with slight distortion but with a straight bass sound running in parallel, has any body got any ideas and also which pedal would achieve this?

I have a Digitech Bass Synth Wah and you can get a pretty close sound out of that. I've managed to emulate Chris's sound on Time is Running Out and Hysteria (adding a bit of overdrive on my amp helps). I can also get that huge yawning synth sound in Tom Sawyer by Rush.

Ok... I am officailly going to make a sticky regarding this...

Here is a list of his last pedal board:

Akai Deep Impact
Human Gear Animato
Russian Big Muff
Digitech Bass Synth Wah
Boss DD-3
Boss OC-2
Line 6 FM4

He plays Pedulla Rapture basses, Fender Jazz Basses, and Rickenbacker Basses.
Plugged into Marshall Amplification and cabinets.

TIRO is a mix of a Roland JP-8000 synth and clean tone. You can dupe it really well with the ZVEX Wolly Mammoth.

Starlight is from what I understand the Animato into the OC-2 or vice versa...

Hysteria I believe is the Deep Impact and Animato blended clean.

From what I can tell, the Akai Deep Impact is used a lot on Origion of Symmetry

His bass head is a Marshall DBS 7400
He uses a 4x10 and a single 15 DBS cab from Marshall, with a Marshall combo amp for his grit.

The Bass synth wah is used live in Sunburn, just listen during the verse.

There is a lot of talk about "two Big Muffs" seen on a youtube video from the making of Absolution, though there is not proof it ever made the cut. I read an article about the making of Absolution, and it is insane the amount of things they did in this album.

For Black Holes and Revolations, Chris used his Big Muff alot. It was quoted that he used it almost in every song.

Cliff notes... Get a Big Muff. Aquire a Bass Synth Wah, and a boss OC-2... Then save your money. A ZVEX Wolly Mammoth will run you $350 new. The deep Impact is another $400 to $500 on Ebay. A Brand New Boss DD-3 is $200.As for the Human Gear Animato.... Good luck finding one. New they are $450 plus, and still available, but you need to be able to read Japanese....

Good Luck.

Those 2 tracks can be approximated with any muff-like fuzz, I get pretty close with my Supercollider pedal.
