Is anyone here familiar with the type of distortion Muse's bass player uses? Think "Time Is Running Out" for example. It's a great tone and almost synth-like. Also, it's a very similar bass tone to the bassline on "Exit Music" by Radiohead. Thanks

EDIT:
Wow. That is the first time I have done that....

I´m going to see Muse in a month. Frakking expensive tickets too.

Tim Commerford (Rage Against the Machine)
Chris Wolstenholme (Muse)
Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
It won't take you long to find some helpful threads here. Heck, even Bass Player magazine has an article online with useful info!

Moreover, how did you manage to never hear "Hysteria" or "Time is Running Out" when they were on infinite repeat a few years back?
Do you not listen to radio at all?
(IMO, two of the three new singles are lackluster; "Knights of Cydonia" is awesome, though!) Quote:

That's why I didn't hear about Muse until this forum.

What does <insert artist here> use?
What's the best Flanger? (The answer is the Maxon FL-9 BTW)
Can I hear a soundclip of <insert boutique fuzz here>
How do I arrange my pedal board.
=) this list was composed all in good fun, im not angry with any TBers, im actually studying Calculus right now and flaking it off, just livin' the American Dream. |

I can never say enough what a phenominal and extremely talented band they are. I've been into them since '99, but the boys in my band are just bowled over by their talent. |

The answer is rather complex (there is a good page called Muse Gear somewhere on the internet that breaks down exactly what he uses and also a bit of a timeline according to albums - I will attempt to summarize the most pertinent bits).
Anyway, he uses a number of different effects to get his signature sound(s), but the most prominent to my mind, and hopefully to the OP, is this:
- Akai Deep Impact Synth pedal (very rare, out of production model, frequently seen on Ebay for up around $400-500). A good, readily available substitute would be an EHX Bass Micro Synth.
- EHX Big Muff Pi (possibly modded, or he would lose all of his low-end.. at least that is my experience with the Big Muff Pi)
- Boss Bass O/D .. can't remember the model
- Various chorus, octaver, phaser, etc, type of modulating effects.. can't remember which in particular
- Some kind of compressor
Also, live (and possibly in studio?) he uses two gigantic Marshall rigs, one set for massive over-drive, and one clean.
Apparently he also uses a Digitech Bass Synth Wah.. who knew??
Here is a good link - http://www.musewiki.org/Bass
There used to be a better one out there, but this will have to suffice for now
Cheers!

He also uses the Human Gear Animato Distortion, but on what song, I have no clue - I've never heard a sound clip of it, so I'm not sure what that one sounds like...
For the more famous songs like "Time is Running Out" and "Hysteria", it's always a clean signal on one rig, and some combination of the Big Muff and/or Deep Impact on the other, I believe.

But it's a killer distortion for bass!! It's an important point with the clean signal on one rig - if you do this with the Animato on the other signal, you get really close to the sound on "Time is running out" and "Hysteria"
That's also the reason why he doesn't lose any bottom end when using the Big Muff.
I don't really get the BMS as a sub for a Deep Impact as someone wrote above, though... Mine for sure doesn't sound like one. |

The Animato is what I believe he runs on Hysteria, along with the Deep Impact.
