Musitronics Mu-Tron III vs ARP Mu-Tron III

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi All,

Can anyone confirm if there is a big difference in the sound that you can achieve from both of these pedals? I know that he HAZ re-issue is not looked upon particularly well by many but never heard much about the ARP Mu-tron III which was only made between 1979 -1980.

Any advice on this would be gratefully received.

Thanks

I have no direct experience with the ARP version, but I can tell you ARP made some of the best-sounding analog synths of the day, including very fat analog filters, so I would bet their production of the pedal would not suck.

Thanks for your comments - there are a few pages on the web which are not so kind to the ARP model but I just wanted some feedback from someone who has tried one or both!

I owned an 1979 ARP version. I was the original owner, too...get the Musitronics. The ARP version sucked, until I got it modded by LSound. It became better, but still sounded thin.

yeah they sound a lot different. i owned both, and had both modded as well. inherently the original mutron (batteries only or with power adapter) sounds the wettest and most bootsy like.

the ARP one with attached power cord and LED sounds thinner and doesn't have the wetness the original does.

even modded the ARP doesn't get there, trust me i tried.

Wow. I'm amazed they dropped the ball like that. I wonder if that was right around the time they were going out of business...

Yeah Bongo, the end of the 70's was also the end of ARP. Too bad, too, with the resurgence of interest in all thing old school and analog, they could be putting out some great stuff right now- and giving Moog a run for their money, just like they did in the 70's.

I like my arp mutron...never tried the original, so I can't really compare. But I've liked it more then any other filter I've tried.
