Must-have bass pedals?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm finally finished with multi effectunits. I can't seem to get a tone out of a digital amp/cab emulator that doesn't sound digital to my ears. I've got a Sansamp VT Bass pedal on the way to me now and I'm sure it's going to be what I'm looking for 'cause I've heard that analog sounds more realistic than digital.

Any other Must-have bass pedals out there?

Boss OC-2

Some sort of bass-friendly Muff clone (Supercollider, Pickle Pie 'B', Bass Big Muff, etc.) or a Malekko Assmaster

EHX Bass Micro Synth

A filter (Q-Tron, Meatball clone, Maxon AF9, DOD FX-25, etc.)

If you've got all those you'll fit right in.

Just be careful being "sure" of a pedal before you even get it... not that the VT Bass isn't a great pedal (that's coming from everything I've read on here... haven't tried on myself yet), but you never really know what you're gonna like and what's gonna work with your rig til you've tried it, gigged it, etc. That said, here are some other pedals on here that get a lot of love:

Fulltone Bass-Drive
HBE Hematoma
Tech 21 Sansamp BDDI
EHX Big Muff Pi (and all its variants)
EHX English Muff'n
EBS ValveDrive
EBS MultiComp
Demeter Compulator
various envelope filters (Mutron III, Q-tron, Meatball, EP-1, etc.)

And there are SO many more... but that's a small start.

You're right - I might not like the VT. I used to own a Sansamp BDDI that I really liked but I sold it in pursuit of multieffect units. We'll see - I hope I like the VT!

Are there any two-stage distortion pedals out there? I love the bass sound that Tim Foreman gets on the song "Amateur Lovers". It sounds like his signal was split with one line going through a clean amp and the other through a dirty amp. Are there any pedals that do the same thing?

To MY knowledge, the best way to get such a sound (without actually going with a stereo rig) is gonna be pedal with a clean blend (or any other pedal you choose in a loop with a blender). The Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive has a blend knob, off the top of my head.

The basics for me:
1. Good quality dirt. My Fulltone Bass Drive and HBE Hematoma fills the that roll.
2. An EQ pedal, 7 to 10 bands.
3. Phaser
4. Volume pedal

Could I use the geminidrive pedal to get a clean/distorted sound like the one in the attached clip?

the VT is not a must-have. I don't have it... No pedal is a must-have, and I have some (and have had a lot more)...

That being said, it mostly depends on the music and the sound you want to have... for most music, I say dirt is welcome on bass. slight OD on top of your clean tone. oktavers can be fun and useful. a good fuzz. an envelope filter. chorus. phaser.

a compressor/limiter, a tuner and a volume pedal are also nice options to be used with your clean tone. I especially like the tuner, hehe. BUT, many people don't like to have a pedal tuner, because it is just an unnecessary thing in your chain. I like to have it, especially when playing in cold places where strings tend to loosen a bit after playing for a few minutes (they warm up) and then I need to tune again. there are other/better ways of doing it, but I'm lazy and I already have the pedal tuner...
