They're not really rare, just expensive.

There is a reissue made by HAZ.

Here try this link for samples of the HAZ (and other env filters).

DO NOT BUY THE RE-ISSUE. I REPEAT - DO NOT BUY THE RE-ISSUE!!!

...Ok so it's not as bad as I'm making it out to be with that warning, but really, it's worth shelling out that little bit extra for an original, as the re-issue pales in comparison.

If you cannot get or afford an original MutronIII then check out the ElectroHarmonix Q-Tron, Mini Q-Tron or other effects, they were designed by Mike Biegel the originator of the Mutron effects line.
The Haz reissue Mutron III+ is a poor copy and it is a rip off in many ways. They do not credit Mike for the creation or pay him any of the money they owe him for the designs that they stole and continue to build without his permission.

They don't pay him because the circuit inside is nothing like the original. it is a digital copy.

IMO, you can get alot closer to the Mu-Tron with a Maxon AF-9 over any of the Q-Tron series...That's just my opinion though. Always best to try before you buy, if you can.

Did they steal the design or did Mike fail to protect it? HAZ was started by a Musictronics engineer who presumably will have access to the original design. Alot of things have been said about the HAZ version but the soundclips I've heard suggest that it is in fact a nice envelope filter and the reputation it has earned with FX gurus stem from the fact that Mike and his supporters bad mouth it. This just seemed to take a life of it's own and many folks just echo what they hear. HAZ is quite the company even. They made electronics for Ned Steinberger.

From the old guard of the FX forums. A post from 2001.

The Mu-tron III+

Quote:
The HAZ isn't a ripoff...they purchased the rights to re-issue. Mike Beigel company sold their claim to the name ages ago during that whole gizmotron debacle. He is just sore because of their DUMB-ASS buisness move they made in selling the Musictronics line. Check out his web page here: http://www.mu-tron.org/
My Mustictronics Mutron III is whisper quiet! Folks keep telling me how noisy theirs are but mine sure isn't and it's a beater!
I'd be interested in a side by side comparison of the original and the Q-tron+. I have heard more than a few times that it wasn't the best for bass? Maybe too touchy or bitchy, I don't know. Some EV filters sound great on paper but are way too tricky to involve in a live context. The Frostave Funk-a duck for example.

The old Ibanez Autofilter pedal is pretty good too.
I have owned two vintage mutron IIIs.

One required obtaining a 9 volt pos / 9 volt neg circuit board to build a power supply. These things chow batteries like mad. The three pin power supply connector is also very old school and difficult to obtain. I sold this unit.

My keeper unit is perhaps a coupla years newer and has an internal power supply and one less switch on the top but it sounds super creamy/vowelly and clean.
