MXR >> Aphex?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi! I've got opportunity to trade my MXR M80 for Aphex Bass Exciter. I dont use MXR's distortion, and I dont send bass through XLR, I only use it for improving my sound.
Comparing these two products only by clean tone, which one sounds better/cut better through band?

They're really totally different. I have the rack mount aphex in rack and i use it with a compressor and an eq. Some might see that as overkill but I've pretty much nailed a tone that has enough heft for rockin sections and enough mids and high mids to play finger style funk. That's pretty much what I do in my band and the aphex really made a big difference in my sound.

They do different things.

MXR is a DI with a preamp.

Aphex boosts specific frequencies to help you sound nicer. Or something. Someone else can probably explain better.

And also, I think the MXR is worth more than the Aphex. I know that over here, a used MXR goes for a lot more than a used Aphex.

Ok, but Aphex has DI out too.
I like MXr, but it adds little too much highs and Lows in sound. On my Fender Rumble 210/100 EQ looks like this to sound fine: Low:1, Lmids:7 Hmids:6 High:4 (in 1-10 scale).
I also cut Bass and Treble on M80.
Maybe I'll ask him to pay me a little for that exchange?

If you don't like the boosted bass and treble on the MXR, you're going to dislike the Aphex Exciters, too.

Turn off the color button and you don't get the boost on highs and lows.

Of the 2, I prefer the MXR. Much more versatile, and a pretty sweet clean tone. +1-cut off the color button, it disables the 3 band eq.

No, turning off the color button does not disable the 3 band eq. They are all active with or without the color button when the unit is on.
