MXR Bass Auto Q question for owners

Sign in to disble this ad
As usual, none of the local shops has one to try so if I get one I'll be buying based on research...

I'm sure from reading the manual, but just want to confirm. The actual sweep of frequencies on this unit is NOT sensitive to how hard you play, right?

I'm a bit of an Envelope Filter/Auto-wah junkie (BassBalls, Q-Tron+, FX25, Pigtronix EP-1, Digitech Bass Synth Wah, Line 6 FM4) but I've been looking for a pedal that can be adjusted with the controls for a pre set sweep that will be the same no matter how hard (or soft) the note is played. In other words, playing the note just triggers the sweep and doesn't in any way affect the range of sweep itself.

If it does actually sound like the Dunlop Bass Wah (or at least close) I'll be a happy man as the 105Q is my fave Bass Wah.

The EHX BMS is the only pedal that offers that filter-sweep functionality. The autoq, iirc, is LFO driven so it cycles without regard to input signal. There is no triggering involved.

The BMS has start and stop sliders that control the range and direction of the sweep, a rate knob that controls the rate.. and a trigger that controls how hard you have to hit it to trigger. The only dynamics involved are the level of signal required to 'trip the wire', but the sweep is the same every time, as dictated by the start/stop and rate controls.

it may be overkill, but in that discipline the octavius squeezer is superior.
you can save your sweeps as presets, and you have control about nearly every filter parameter you can imagine: hp/bp/lp, resonance, start/stop freq, attack/decay time, trigger threshold, mix dry/wet, and many more...
i'm not so much convinced of its capabilities as a synth, but as a versatile filter the OS is king. soundwise i would say it's more on the cleaner side. not as gargling as a fx25. i can't really compare it to a mxr, cause i never played one, sorry...

its one of my "To buy" pedals because i loved its sound and i love the 105q too! but i dont have much clue about it. i liked even more because its got a volume knob
and yes i'd be interested in knowing the the answer to the question in the op too!

I find that it is kinda in-betwen being touch sensitive and not.

It does feel kinda touch sensitive but it will respond well even if you feed a square-wave fuzz into it.

So it is like it isn't dependent totally on the volume coming in, it definitely triggers, but once it is triggered, it feels touch sensitive, but not like my discombobulator.

Hope that helps... kinda hard to describe.
