MXR Blowtorch gain knob does nothing?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all, I got a "good" deal on an MXR blowtorch in apparently excellent condition, and I really like the sound, but... The gain knob does not change the sound at all. All the other knobs/switches seem to work properly.

Any idea what is wrong and if I can fix it myself?

Thanks!

I had the same problem with a Blowtorch I bought second hand a while ago. I returned it of course.

I am not sure but the problem might be in one of the first stages. I fear it might be vulnerable to electrostatic charges.

I don’t know it is can be easily fixed. I would recommend you contact MXR. They may be able to help you.

When you turn the knob, does it crackle at all? If you say, yes - the pot is either dirty or shot. If no, I would still consider this. Try and acquire some de-oxidizing spray (the wiper inside the pot can oxide over time) like DeOxIt. Some people say WD-40 works but I am not sure. I would research that more if you choose to do this

No, there is no sound at all when moving the knob. But that's a good idea, I'll try spraying the pot.

Thanks!
