MXR Blowtorch noise problem.

Sign in to disble this ad
My blowtorch makes a horrible noise when I put it into my chain even when its switched off. Its a kind of cross between a eeeeeeeeeek! and a Hmmmmmm! I gather this is not normal.
I bought it this week and used it with the band for the first time today. I haven't noticed anything a low volume but at high volume the noise has made it useless. My set up is Blowtorch - Dunlop bass wah - QTron- Providence Chorus - Punch Factory Comp - They are all powered by 9V Batteries and my set up is totally quiet without the Blowtorch.

Any ideas? Is it ****ed? Should I be using a power supply? Anyone else having this problem?

Feedback? If you've got the gain super high and you're standing real close to your amp...but if it's making sound when the pedal is off I've got not idea...

I tried it again today and still had the same problem. The odd thing is when I picked it up off the floor it stopped. Just touching it made no difference. I'm stumped! Anyone know why this is happening?

I tried a friends Blowtorch and it was really quiet (it is on my GAS list). MXR effects to the best of my knowledge do not have a true bypass so any electrical issues could show even when switched off.

If you bought it new, I would exchange it. Sounds defective.

[edit] As for using a power supply, batteries are generally quieter than power supplies with most pedals.

Its a strange one. It seems like its picking up some interference. I don't understand why my other pedals aren't picking it up. Its odd that when I lift it of the floor it stops. Maybe it is defective. I know I'll take it back to the shop and it won't do it as its fine at home.

The Blowtorch is True Bypass though.

Does it do it on it's own, outside of your effects setup? With a battery? With a wall-wart? With a power supply? Different cables, different amps?

You might be having a ground loop issue since it stopped when you picked it up off the floor. That or something could be loose, maybe a bad solder joint. Open it up and see.

1+

the blowtorch is truebypass, so when its off, it should be out of your chain, so you shouldnt get any noise. Sounds like a faulty pedal. To be honest, even if it works with a power supply and not with batteries, you shouldnt have to pay for a faulty pedal, get a refund and try to get another one. I bought my first one used and it was faulty (light wouldnt switch off and switch was really-like speaker blowing-loud), my new one (also used) is wicked.
