Hi
I'm interested in getting a delay pedal. I really love the sound that Tony Grey has on his solos with Hiromi.
He uses a TC Vintage delay, that's been discontinued now.
So i'm considering the MXR Carbon copy.
Will it get the sort of sound that I'm after.

It depends how much you're wanting to spend, if you've got the buck get an Eventide Timefactor...

A new pedal comes out.
A bunch of people buy it, and sell their current similar-function pedal.
Some buy back the original.
Others wait until the next new pedal comes out, and repeat the cycle.

The delays can also get quite muddy, and it is prone to feedback and overloading even on moderate settings. I can't speak for the Memory Boy/Toy, but if they're anything like their big brother the Memory Man, I'm sure they will be great. The only thing that has kept the Memory Man off my board is the fact that it is monstrously huge and that it would be adding yet another wall wart to my setup. (I've already got two stashed under the board for my ModFactor and PitchFactor respectively)
That being said, I have a Malekko Echo 600B on my board currently and I absolutely love it. It's everything that I wished the Carbon Copy had been, even though it doesn't have its own modulation.
The Memory Toy would be the only thing that might bump it from its pedistal, but it would have to sound really good to do so, and have the headroom to match. |

The Malekko looks interesting, a bit pricey but that's not a real problem. http://roselanemusic.com/epages/esho...als%22/Malekko
I take it by Echo 600B you mean the 'bright' one. What's the difference between the 'dark' and 'bright' ?

E600B is brighter, E600D is darker. It's not really a night-and-day difference as the names would have you expect; as neither are going to be squeaky clean repeats like you would get with a digital delay. I received the E600B in a trade, and while I have not had the chance to play through a E600D, the soundclips that I have heard of the E600B are pretty representative of how it sounds. I would expect the E600D's soundclips to be about the same, which is what I am basing this assumption on. I would be very happy to be proven wrong by someone who has owned or owns both though. |
