| | | | I just picked one up today. It's really hot, but other than that, it's a very cool dirt pedal for bass. I play a .125 low B, & using the bump button and/or 100Hz boost really keeps the low end.
The bump brings up a thicker low end, with some mid boost shift to lower mids, while the knob cuts OR boosts the 100Hz frequency, unlike the Green Rhino 100Hz knob that only boosts. This will definitely rob you of ANY lows if you set it below 12 o'clock. Dunlop says it gives a very focused tone for guitars, if used. I could imagine some cool bass scenarios when it could come in handy, but mostly in conjunction with other effects, such as phaser, envelope, wah or synth.
The output knob doesn't need to really go above 1/2 way, if that, & the gain knob gets absolutely out of control dimed. If you do crank the output, I suggest you choose low gain settings & you can get a super fat, old school tone. Think James Jamerson, straight into the boards.
I like that it's got some real distortion tones at the extremes, a good saturated amp overdrive, in the middle, & some warmth at conservative settings. This won't work as a boost, as it definitely colors your tone, even at low settings, but it's musical, for sure. I got some great sustain with cool overtones & harmonics. I tried it with a PBass, a Jazz, a Grabber, & a Rick. They all sounded good. They also sounded different. I know some of you are thinking "of course they sounded different". I mention this because some pedals have such an overbearing tone that it's a one trick kind of pedal. This pedal responds to your bass choice in a very cool way. I particularly liked the Rick tone. The Grabber was almost too low. I found myself dialing back the 100Hz to almost +/- 0 & keeping the bump on. I also had the Tone past midpoint with that bass. No other time did this knob go about 10-11 o'clock.
I only used a tube amp, as we don't have any solid states around. I'd imagine that the same would be true about amps that is true about basses. I didn't have time to do so, but I want to try out different cabs, & maybe even my 100 watt Plexi. I think I might be close to a real dirty Lemmy sound. I used an Ampeg 6x10 for starters, as that's what we had hooked up. I think the horns in the cab contributed to the out of control-ness I mentioned. I want to hear it through my other Ampegs; they're 8x10 and 2x15. I use the 2x15 live, so I hope they like each other. |

| | | | I'll try. We are in the process of dismantling our studio because we have to move. I was hoping to use it on the live recording we did Wednesday, but that got cut short by a noise complaint that brought the police, hence, why we are moving. Apparently our landlord has moved in a prostitute, a crankhead, & a college student & they're all LIVING in our commercially zoned building.
But I digress. Give me a week or so & I should be able to give y'all something. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
