MXR El Grande Bass Fuzz - 87Hz vs. 113Hz ???

Sign in to disble this ad
So I just got a MXR El Grande Bass Fuzz.
I'm digging it. I think it will work nicely on my board.

I did a quick search of the board looking for an answer and couldn't find it though.

The "DEEP" switch has an internal adjustment.
A trim pot that will boost or cut 15dB (That part I understand)
Then, there's a two-way switch that goes from 87Hz to 113Hz

I can hear the difference, but what exactly is it doing sonically?
I haven't tried it yet with my band.
Is one setting superior to sit better in the mix?

I am running a Fender P-Bass with a Quarter Pound pickup into a MarkBass Little Mark II into a Genz Benz NEOX-212T

Thanks for any info.

According to a youtube clip I saw, the deep switch adjustment control is located inside the back of the pedal on top of the battery compartment. there you'll find a switch that you goes between 87hz to 113 hz. and a trim pot that adjusts the low-end boost. you're gonna need a screw driver to do that. to answer your first question, it basically adjusts the low-end boost on the deep switch.

Here's youtube clips demonstrating the pedal and explaining the deep switch adjustments.

113Hz is obviously closer to the midrange. it sounds a bit fatter. it depends on what you like.

in a band setting, as with everything, it depends on the band. maybe you could say that 113Hz cuts through a little better. but if things get too muddy then you would want to set it at 87Hz

it also depends on how you set the trimpot. i like to boost it alot at 87Hz. the idea is to get massive lows without trespassing into the guitarists' territory. if i were setting it at 113Hz, i would roll it off a little.

i have since sold it off though. i played 2 gigs with it but it really wasn't what i was looking for.

as you experiment with fuzz and overdrive on bass, I encourage people to try it with their tweeter turned off too.

The tweeter has a strong affect on an overdriven tone.
