MXR envelop filter frustration

Sign in to disble this ad
I just got an MXR Envelop Filter. Because I have a very light touch, even with sensitivity set to max I have to really dig in to get that wah sound.

I played around with all the other knobs for an hour but "digging in" seems like the only solution when I finger pick (of course, if I use a pick, I get a massive funky wah tone).

I don't have this problem with the auto-wahs of my Korg PD4X and Digitech BP-80.

Am I doing something wrong with the MXR?

Well an Auto-Wah and an Envelope filter are two different executions of the same idea. Part of the difference is that an Auto-Wah doesn't depend on attack, IIRC.

With any Env. filter, you've got to learn to play it, and I'd be willing to bet the MXR is no exception.

You're talking about the M82, right? What bass are you using?

Yes, the M82. I played all the basses listed in my signature through it. Maybe all my basses have relatively weak output.

Yeah, unless you have a really, really light touch you should have no problem. Agree with the weak battery possibility.

Hmm...I use a 9V battery that my wife gave me. That's the only 9V one at my home. I'll buy a new battery and test it again. I hope it's the power.

If the battery is not the problem, perhaps boosting the signal of the bass before the MXR M82 might help. Pedal could be bad as well. I have this pedal and have never had any problem.

Put a clean boost in fornt of the pedal. Like an RC booster, or an mxr microamp.

Done, fini.

Couldn't wait till tomorrow. I drove to a gas station and bought a 9V battery. A new battery solved the problem. OMG, I'm in a funk heaven!
