| MXR EQ pedal -- really liking it

I had to fly out of state for a couple gigs last weekend. I was trying to travel light, so I only brought a few effect pedals along. One pedal that I'm really starting to depend on is my MXR M-109 6-band graphic eq. I was provided an Ampeg SVT. My first time gigging with one. Dug the tube tone of the SVT but found that I needed to do some pretty serious cutting in the midrange to get a sound I liked. Of course I could have used the eq on the head, but, not being familiar with exactly what frequency all the knobs and switches operated at, I would've had to mess around quite a bit. Since I've gotten used to the MXR eq pedal I know exactly what effect the various bands have on my sound and I was able to tweak a great tone out of the SVT in no time at all.
My regular amp is an EA Doubler which only has a three band EQ, so the MXR pedal really comes in handy there for fine-tuning my EQ.
I wasn't that excited about the M-109 when I bought it, but it's really becoming a fundamental component of my live rig. It's not a super quiet pedal when engaged, but it gets the job done in live settings. |
