MXR Flanger SOUNDCLIPS

Sign in to disble this ad
I use this pedal fairly frequently, and I've got some spare time, so I thought I'd do some quick soundclips because I don't think there are any MXR Flanger soundclips floating around for bass.

First Clean:

Second, with the MXR Bass DI for some chuggy sounds:

Third, for some color on your riffs:

And last with the OC-2 which is badass:

Once again I forgot: Fender MIA Jazz Bass -> OC-2 -> MXR Bass DI -> MXR Flanger -> Ampeg V4BH.

So I haven't given a broad range of samples for what this pedal can do, but it can do more metallic sounds, funky clangy sounds, fixed flanger sounds where the pedal is stuck in one position and doesn't modulate (I think this is what the EHX Filter Matrix mode does, right?), and even funny bird chirps with microphonic feedback that are pretty cool. I also get a more Roger Waters type sound when I play through darker sounding 15's (the samples are done through 12's), and I suppose flatwound strings would be more conducive to that. I may thow some flats on one of my guitars because it's a really cool sound.

I get a lot of different sounds out of this box depending on what kind of guitar I'm playing through it and what kind of amp I'm playing it through, so I don't know if I can come close to the Tool song with the other gear I use (if he's using Hi Fi gear, my passive Jazz Bass and Ampeg heads won't be able to match it at all), but if I can find the time I'll take a listen and see what I can do. Lately I've been playing this pedal through a dark sounding cabinet that gives more of a Roger Waters-esque tone.

I listened to the soundclip on amazon and my rig doesn't come remotely close to the crisp top end on that bass tone. Sorry.

LOL, no body can get close to that tone. Unless you sneak into JCs house at night and steal all his gear, but the risk that Maynard would be there guarding it is to high. As we all know, Maynard is creepy. But yer that Flanger plus OC-2 sounds mad as, given me some ideas.

If I had a more hi fi bass and cabinets with horns I could do it relatively accurately, but he's getting effect on frequencies that just aren't there in my rig. I'm going for a completely different sound, for which I favor Ampegs and 15's.

But that being said, I forgot to mention that there is some rolloff of the highs with the MXR Flanger, which is perfect for the darker flanger sound I'm going for (unlike the samples I did), but in my opinion it would be less than ideal if you're going for the sound I heard on Fourty Six and 2. My samples aren't high enough quality for you to really feel the rolloff though, what you'll hear is that my strings are dead. The rolloff is not so much a dramatic muting of the top end as a darkening of the sound, so readers be advised.

Yer no problems man, i mean each effect pedal is different, as is each rig, bass etc etc. Altough in regards to the darkened sound of the MXR you could always change the filter capicator for a different value, hence making it more bright or more dark. One thing to do could be putting a switch or trim pot or both in to get a customized tone from it.

That would be a good idea. I think it would make the pedal a lot more useful. I'm happy with the way it sounds for what I'm doing with it, but if I ever need a different sound from it I'll look into that.
