It depends on which Boss Flanger you're talking about. I'm not a fan of the BF-3, but I do think highly of the BF-2. I like the MXR and Boss both, but prefer the MXR as the Boss is a little bit boxy sounding.

If you've got the money, I'd get the new Moog Cluster Flux Chorus/Flanger. I'm sure that would fill all your needs .

I have both. More specifically I have the MXR M-117 R and Boss BF-2 (not the BF-2B).
If you want warmth and a full spectrum flanger the MXR is the way to go.
If you want an 80's voiced flanger with a kind of mid focus, somewaht cold and cut through the Boss is a good direction. That being said the difference are subtle and they are both very good flangers.
One more point: I like the MXR M-117R better than the MXR Micro Flanger. The M-117 is richer in tone and warmer.

I think the Micro Flanger is pretty good actually, but obviously you get more with the M-117R.

I've played both Boss's, but only heard clips of the MXR. Personally, I think the DOD FX72 slays them both for bass.
