MXR Fuzz / Envelope / Octave Effects - Ideal placement of FX

Sign in to disble this ad
I just picked up the MXR Grande Fuzz, Octaver, and Envelope filter. I've heard great things about the combo of these three pedals. My question - what's the best layout/order of the effects from my bass to the amp? I want that fatty synth grundge/funky sound!!

Thanks again talkbass.

This gets asked quite a bit. Honestly, there isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to order a chain. What really matters is whether the effects order works for what you need. Try different orders, see what works for you.
There's only 6 different ways to try, test them all out for a day or two each trying different settings to see what you like.
Code:
Octave -> Envelope -> Fuzz
Octave -> Fuzz -> Envelope
Fuzz -> Octave -> Envelope
Fuzz -> Envelope -> Octave
Envelope -> Octave -> Fuzz
Envelope -> Fuzz -> Octave

Thanks, TheMutt. Makes sense to me. Didn't know if there was an order that definitely wouldn't work as well.. I've heard envelope should be near the front, but I guess with 3 pedals it doesn't matter quite as much. Thanks again

Envelope near the front helps it react best to your playing dynamics. My personal favorite of the six is Envelope->Fuzz->Octave, but YMMV.

Thanks man, I will pay special attention to that one.. I figured I'd either end up with that combo, or 8va->Fuzz. Thx man.

I have all three and run El Grande-> Octave Deluxe-> BEF.... currently. Sometimes I switch the BEF and Octave around for experimenting purposes but have found I get best results (IME&O) with the Fuzz in front. Effects on the fuzz sound great. Fuzz on the effects can drown the effect out. To each his own though. You will find your formula with a little time and creativity.

i was under the impression that analog octavers like a clean signal....so bod first for me. looks like you got some experimenting to do.

this made me laugh because I'm "studying" for my probability final, 3! = 6 possible permutations of pedals

This one sounds way way better than the rest. Thanks!
