MXR M-80, Color Switch and EQ

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an MXR M-80 which I really like. But I don't quite understand the relationship between the color switch and the EQ when the color switch is engaged, since the EQ knobs can still shape the sound. Can't you do the same thing with the color switch disengaged using the EQ? And let's say you have the three EQ knobs at 12 and the color switch engaged--what positions are the knobs really at sound wise?

The color gives you more bottom and some highs, but it's not the same as turning up the bass and treble knobs. The color switch is a really tailored EQ, more than what you can get out of a three band.

+1

It's a pre-programmed contour ("smiley face" EQ, in this case) that you could probably get with a more flexible graphic EQ, but not with the three-band EQ controls alone.

All of the EQ knobs still work, whether or not that Color switch is on. But if it's on, then your EQ knobs will be changing the "Color" sound instead of a flat sound from your bass.

I played with the colour switch engaged for a few year now, but since finding out about the smiley face Eq i've switched it off. Smiley EQ seems to be so "passay" these days

How about using the color function with a passive fretless?

No problem if that's the eq you like...
